“To the visitor to China in the year 1926 one of the most interesting and thought-provoking features of the landscape was the physical evidence of the activities of Christian missionaries. If the traveller entered the country by Shanghai, on the outskirts of the city his steamer passed the substantial buildings of an institution which he was informed was Shanghai College, maintained by American Baptists.”

I thought ‘Baptist Compound’ was a somewhat sarcastic reference when I read it in a book. I guessed it was the area of the University of Shanghai; other books referred to the Baptists as north of the city and foreign concessions.
I see several Lees and Lis listed in books about U. S. but none at first sight that correspond to Peter or H. H. which is probably the initials of the romanization of the Chinese name.
